Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine England, Member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, and Member of the New Zealand Natural Medicine Association, Dr McGrath is well published in research and professional journals, see publications and may be found on ResearchGate.

In addition to clinical practice, Christopher has been active in part-time university lecturing for 20 years, at the University of Otago for 15 years, receiving an Excellence in Teaching award in 2020 for his contribution to the teaching of clinical and functional anatomy into the postgraduate physiotherapy programme. He is a Sentinel Reader for the Health Information Research Unit, Clinical Relevance Online Rating System of McMaster University in Canada, an established global centre of evidence-based medicine. He formerly held an Honorary Visiting Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine at Victoria University, Melbourne, and was long serving member of the New Zealand ACC Expert Panel that developed the Acute Low Back Pain Management Guidelines.

As of April 2024, his research items attracted over 14,465 reads on the academic platform ResearchGate with 254 identified citations and a 'Research Interest Score' higher than 74% of ResearchGate members, 79% Allied Health Science researchers, 76% Anatomy researchers, 67% researchers in Human Biology, and h index of 9. His anatomical research, published osteopathic commentary and a range of other scientific and editorial articles have been published and cited around the World, from Spain to Japan and Korea, Canada to Eastern Europe, from the UK to Scandinavia, in a wide range of journals and book chapters: medical, rheumatological, surgical, neurosurgical, anaesthetic, physical therapy, orthopaedic surgery, forensic and humanitarian nursing, medical science, osteopathic medicine, neuroscience, and medical science.He has been a longstanding member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine (Int J Osteopath Med), The Journal of Health Design, and The International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and formerly, he was a senior editor for the Australasian Medical Journal.

With doctoral (PhD) and master (MSc) degrees (Anatomy) from the Otago University School of Medical Sciences, in addition to postgraduate diplomas in Occupational Health Practice (Otago) and in Biomechanics (Bioengineering Unit, Strathclyde University, Glasgow), Dr McGrath is both experienced and credentialed. His initial undergraduate osteopathic qualification (DO), with a concurrent diploma in naturopathy (ND), were gained from the well known and recognised British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCNO Group), London, in 1984. For many years he practiced and lectured in the osteopathic field before relinquishing osteopathic practice.

Leveraging his extensive clinical and academic experience, he now consults in musculoskeletal healthcare.


Dr McGrath holds membership of the New Zealand Natural Medicine Association and the Natural Health Practitioners of New Zealand. He relinquished ACC treatment provider status in 2021.
